What is an umbilical hernia?
An umbilical hernia is a protrusion of intra-abdominal contents through a defect in the muscle layer around the navel.
Symptoms include bulging at the umbilicus, discomfort when standing and increased pain on straining.
Diagnosis
Diagnosis is clinical; ultrasound or CT may be added in larger or complicated cases.
Treatment options
Treatment depends on hernia size, comorbidities and overall health.
- Small umbilical hernia: primary or small mesh repair
- Medium–large hernia: mesh repair
- Recurrent or complex cases: laparoscopic / robotic approach
Laparoscopic technique
Three to four small incisions are made; the hernia contents are reduced and the abdominal wall is reinforced from inside with a mesh.
Aims include smaller incisions, less tissue trauma, faster recovery and reduced recurrence risk.
How is the surgery performed?
Performed under general anaesthesia. Operative time is 45–90 minutes.
Most patients are discharged after 1–2 days.
Recovery
