Gastric Sleeve Surgery (Sleeve Gastrectomy) in Antalya
Gastric sleeve surgery is a laparoscopic bariatric procedure in which a large portion of the stomach is removed in patients who meet clinical criteria for obesity. Op.Dr.Gökhan ATEŞ provides individualised evaluation for eligible patients in Antalya.
What is gastric sleeve surgery?
In sleeve gastrectomy approximately 75–80% of the stomach is removed, leaving a narrow tube-shaped stomach.
Reducing stomach volume decreases food intake; removing the region producing the appetite hormone ghrelin also aims to reduce appetite.
Who is it suitable for?
Suitability is determined by body mass index, comorbidities, previous weight loss attempts and overall health.
- Adults with BMI 40 and above
- Adults with BMI 35–40 and comorbidities such as type 2 diabetes, hypertension or sleep apnoea
- Eligible candidates who have not achieved lasting results with diet and lifestyle changes
Pre-operative evaluation
Pre-operative work-up includes detailed examination, blood tests, endoscopy and cardiopulmonary assessment. Endocrinology, dietitian and psychiatric consultations are part of the standard pathway.
How is the surgery performed?
The procedure is performed under general anaesthesia using a laparoscopic approach. Four to five small incisions are made in the abdomen and the larger portion of the stomach is removed with stapler devices.
The procedure typically lasts 60–90 minutes. Hospital stay is usually 2–3 days.
Advantages of the laparoscopic approach
The aims of the minimally invasive approach include:
- Small incisions and less tissue trauma
- Generally shorter hospital stay
- Earlier return to daily life
- Less post-operative pain
Recovery and nutrition
A staged diet is followed: liquids for the first two weeks, puree and soft foods in the next two weeks, then a gradual transition to solid foods, supervised by the surgeon and dietitian.
Weight loss is most pronounced in the first 6–12 months; long-term adherence is critical.
Risks and considerations
As with any surgery, possible risks include bleeding, staple-line leak, infection, thrombosis and long-term reflux. Individual risk varies and is discussed in detail during the consultation.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is gastric sleeve surgery reversible?+
Because part of the stomach is permanently removed, the procedure is not reversible. The decision is therefore made after a thorough evaluation.
How much weight is lost after surgery?+
Weight loss depends on initial weight, age, metabolic profile and patient adherence. A significant portion of excess weight is typically lost within the first 12–18 months.
How long is the hospital stay?+
Hospital stay is usually 2–3 days and may vary depending on the clinical course.
When can I return to work and daily life?+
Office-based work can usually be resumed within 7–14 days. Patients with physically demanding jobs may need a longer recovery; the decision is made during follow-up.
Are vitamin and mineral supplements needed?+
Vitamin and mineral supplementation and regular blood checks are recommended; the protocol is individualised.
What is the effect on type 2 diabetes?+
In eligible patients, marked improvement in type 2 diabetes control can be observed; individual results vary and follow-up is continued together with endocrinology.
How is the process planned for international patients?+
