Gastric Bypass Surgery (Roux-en-Y) in Antalya
Gastric bypass is a laparoscopic bariatric procedure in which the stomach is reduced and a section of the small intestine is bypassed, in patients who meet the clinical criteria for obesity. Op.Dr.Gökhan ATEŞ provides individualised evaluation for eligible patients in Antalya.
What is gastric bypass?
In gastric bypass, a small pouch is created from the stomach, and a section of the small intestine is bypassed and connected to this new pouch.
This reduces both food intake and the length of intestine available for absorption. It may be considered in patients with obesity combined with type 2 diabetes or significant reflux.
Who is it suitable for?
Suitability is determined by BMI, comorbidities and overall health.
- Adults with BMI 40 and above
- Adults with BMI 35–40 with type 2 diabetes, severe reflux, hypertension or sleep apnoea
- Eligible candidates with weight regain or reflux after previous sleeve gastrectomy
Pre-operative evaluation
Work-up includes detailed examination, blood tests, endoscopy and cardiopulmonary assessment. Endocrinology, dietitian and psychiatric consultations are part of the standard pathway.
How is the surgery performed?
Gastric bypass is performed under general anaesthesia using a laparoscopic approach. The stomach pouch is created and a section of small intestine is bypassed through small incisions.
The procedure typically lasts 90–150 minutes. Hospital stay is usually 3–4 days.
Differences from gastric sleeve
Sleeve gastrectomy reduces only the volume of the stomach. Gastric bypass reduces the stomach and also alters absorption. For some patients with reflux or type 2 diabetes, bypass may be considered preferentially.
Recovery and nutrition
A staged diet is followed: liquids and purees in the early weeks, then a gradual transition to soft and solid foods, supervised by the surgeon and dietitian.
Long-term vitamin and mineral supplementation and regular blood tests are required.
Risks and considerations
Possible risks include bleeding, anastomotic leak, infection, thrombosis, vitamin and mineral deficiencies and, rarely, internal hernia. Individual risk is discussed in detail during the consultation.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is gastric bypass reversible?+
Roux-en-Y gastric bypass can technically be revised but substantially alters the anatomy. The decision is made after a thorough evaluation.
Sleeve or bypass — which is more suitable?+
The decision depends on BMI, comorbidities, reflux and metabolic status. Each procedure has different ideal candidate profiles.
How long is the hospital stay?+
Hospital stay is usually 3–4 days, depending on the clinical course.
When can I return to work?+
Office-based work can usually be resumed within 10–14 days; longer for physically demanding jobs. The decision is made during follow-up.
Are vitamin and mineral supplements needed?+
Yes. Lifelong supplementation including B12, iron, calcium and vitamin D, with regular blood tests, is recommended.
What is the effect on type 2 diabetes?+
In eligible patients, gastric bypass can lead to marked improvement in glycaemic control; results are individual and follow-up is continued with endocrinology.
How is the process planned for international patients?+
Initial consultation can be arranged on WhatsApp; examination, tests and surgery dates are planned in advance. Communication is available in English, German and Russian.
